Fort Myers Beach occupies all of what is known as Estero Island, just 10 miles from both downtown Fort Myers and the Southwest Florida International Airport. The island’s south side faces the Gulf of Mexico and has miles of beaches. However, the best beach in the area is on Lover’s Key in the state park on the island. This is an excellent place if you are at all interested in nature as there are many birds living in the mangrove forests here. This also happens to be a great spot for shelling. The Estero Bay side of the island is best viewed by boat or kayak, either of which may be rented in the area. There are many uninhabited keys within the bay that play host to hundreds of different species of birds, plants and mammals.
